The birth of a visionary: Antoine Soradora

Born on a scorching July day in 1902 in the idyllic town of Loulé, nestled in the heat of southern Portugal, Antoine Soradora's early life was shaped by the rhythms of agriculture and religion. Every Sunday he faithfully accompanied his deeply religious parents to the church of Saint-Clément. To those around him, Antoine seemed destined for a future as a wise and thoughtful priest.

Yet beneath the surface, a hidden world beckoned him - a world of scents and perfumes that whispered to his soul. Wandering through the lush Portuguese countryside, Antoine's senses were captivated by the aromatic symphony of his surroundings - from wild lavender by the roadside to the fusion of earth and water, from bubbling springs in hidden undergrowth to the earthy notes of peat and hay, from the freshly cut grass of spring to the intoxicating bouquets of flowers and fruits.

In 1920, at the age of 18, Antoine Soradora faced a profound decision. Should he follow the well-trodden path that had been laid out for him, or venture beyond his homeland to embrace life to the full? Fate intervened when a friend named Sandro delivered news that would change the course of Antoine's destiny: "France is recruiting foreign labor to support its extensive mining operations."

With unwavering determination, Antoine made a decision that would change his life forever. He left the familiar surroundings of his homeland and embarked on a challenging journey that eventually led him to the Bouches-du-Rhône region of France, to a picturesque village called Gréasque.

There, he was welcomed with open arms by a friendly French family and given a modest hut on the edge of their garden as his new home. Antoine was delighted, and his first gesture of gratitude to the family was to transform this pristine piece of land into a paradise. In the heart of Provence, he cultivated a thriving Garden of Eden, rich in vibrant flowers, lush fruit trees and a variety of aromatic plants.

During this period, Antoine divided his days between working in the mines and lovingly tending his cherished garden. In his moments of relaxation, he explored the region and fell deeply in love with the charming town of Grasse.

In the heights of Grasse, Antoine Soradora met Etienne, a tall, slender man two decades his senior, with a childlike soul and a deep appreciation for the world of plants. Their shared passion for flora forged a natural bond, and Antoine introduced Etienne to the wonders of his garden. In turn, he sparked Etienne's fascination.

Together, Antoine Soradora and Etienne embarked on a fragrant journey of experimentation, using their shared knowledge and sensibility to create perfumes. Their partnership flourished, and thanks to the capital they gained from the thriving jasmine cultivation, they were able to source the finest raw materials for their olfactory ventures.

After Etienne's death, Antoine Soradora took sole responsibility for their shared vision. With boundless creativity, he created his very first perfume just one year after taking over the management of their workshop.

Antoine's journey continued as he explored the lively bars of Aix-en-Provence, where he met Rose, a Gréasquienne who would become his beloved wife. Together they welcomed three daughters into the world and passed on Antoine's wisdom and strict standards to the next generation.

Today, SORA DORA, bearing the name of its courageous Portuguese immigrant founder, stands as a respected perfume brand spanning four generations. The 2021 collection includes seven fragrances, each capturing the power and emotion of Antoine Soradora's incredible odyssey - a man who left his homeland and loved ones to pursue his dream.
